Dusk in Istanbul, there are flocks of starlings that move like clouds of fish. I had noticed that there were no large flocks of birds in Amman. Instead, dotted about the city and always keeping close to certain rooftops, were distinct flocks of 20 to 30 unusual pigeons. This reminded me of Mardin, a city in south eastern Turkey that is famous for its birds that do cartwheels in midair.
Equally famous are the men who keep these birds.
Meet Samir and Bilal. They are twins. They invited us up to their rooftop sanctuary. They showed off their beautiful birds. They offered delicious cake and cardamon flavoured ‘Turkish’ coffee.
It was a wonderful afternoon.

A gambling metaphor, (translation: “let the die be cast”), meaning that events have passed a point of no return, that something inevitably will happen.
